The Abramovich era ends. Operation worth over 4 billion pounds
Former Chelsea boss Roman Abramovich put the club up for sale after it ended up on the list of British government-sanctioned oligarchs. The announcement of the sale came as early as the beginning of March, coinciding with the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Abramovich acquired the club in 2003, with the – successful – goal of transforming it into a global football powerhouse. As Il Sole 24 Ore had already written, the operation will cost the new owners 2.5 billion pounds, with another 1.75 billion destined for the renovation of the stadium (Stamford Bridge) to strengthen the women’s team and the academy and support from the Chelsea Foundation.
