On Monday evening, Conegliano’s Imoco Volley defeated Vero Volley Milano 3 sets to 1 in match 5 of the finals of the women’s volleyball championship and won the Scudetto for the fifth consecutive time.
Conegliano, which has also been the reigning world champion since December, had started the Scudetto finals with a win (3-2), but then suffered two defeats in a row (3-0, 3-2). In game 4, played on Saturday in Monza, Milan hadn’t managed to get the decisive victory, however, losing with a clear 3-0. In the decisive match, played at the Palaverde in Treviso, Conegliano won again, after seven match points in the last set, thanks to 25 individual points scored by Canadian Alexa Gray and Swedish Isabelle Haak.
Its full name is Prosecco Doc Imoco Conegliano. It is the team of one of the two cities north of Treviso where the production of prosecco is concentrated (the other is Valdobbiadene) and it is thanks to prosecco and the large wine supply chain of its territory that it has become one of the most competitive in the world in less than ten years.
The current team was in fact founded in 2012 after the downsizing of Spes, the old city team, which remained active only in the youth sector. Since then, thanks to investments by owners and partners, all linked to the territory and in some way also to the production of wine, there have been six championships won and twenty trophies overall, with a Champions League and two club world championships.
Imoco also holds the unbeaten world record for a women’s volleyball team: between 2019 and 2021 they won 76 matches in a row. At that time Paola Egonu also played there, considered by many to be the strongest volleyball player in the world. Since last year Egonu has been playing in Turkey with VakifBank in Istanbul, but her return to Italy seems almost certain. The Scudetto finals of the men’s volleyball championship between Trento and Civitanova Marche are also underway these days. After the first four games, the series is tied: the decisive match will be played on Wednesday evening in Trento.
