Covid and Delta variant, Gimbe: “Cases increase, but hospitalizations not” – breaking latest news

Rome, 8 July 2021 – They date back to i Covid infections in Italy (also linked by the Delta variant), but at the moment this it hasn’t had any impact on hospitals. This is what the independent monitoring of the Gimbe Foundation for the week from 30 June to 6 July. The increase is 5% (5,571 cases against 5,306 in the previous 7 days). On the other hand, there is a decline for all other indicators: hospitalizations mark -24.2%, admissions to intensive care -30.7%, deaths -26.4%.

In particular in 11 Regions (Abruzzo, Campania, Liguria, Lombardy, Marche, Autonomous Province of Trento, Autonomous Province of Bolzano, Sardinia, Sicily, Tuscany and Veneto) there was an increase in new cases compared to the previous week, while the remaining 10 Regions are confirmed in decline. “In terms of new weekly cases – declares Nino Cartabellotta, president of the Gimbe Foundation – after 15 consecutive weeks of descent, there is an increase of 5% compared to the previous week. Even the test activity, after 7 weeks of decline, records an increase of 15.5%, however continuing to settle on too low numbers, with consequent underestimation of new cases and insufficient contact tracing “. In fact, the Foundation still highlights, from the week of May 5-11 the number of people tested weekly progressively decreased by 60.3%, rising from 662,549 to 263,213, and then rising again this week to 303,969.




I deaths, after the apparent stabilization of last week (probably due to recalculations), they started to decline again, settling in the last week at 162 with an average of 23 per day compared to 31 the previous week.

People in home isolation, from the peak of 28 March, went from 540,855 to 41,121 (-94.2%).

Finally, on the Delta variant front, Gimbe highlights how the fears about its circulation are not linked to vaccines, which cover well from hospitalizations and deaths, but from over 5 and a half million over 60s who have not completed the immunization cycle and are therefore discovered. In detail, 2.29 million (12.8%) have not yet received even a dose of vaccine with significant regional differences (from 22.6% in Sicily to 7.7% in Puglia). The latest ISS flash survey estimates a spread in Italy of the Delta variant at 22.7%.
