Bryson DeChambeau insisted he didn’t want to be a “super controversial” figure after a tough season, which made him want to leave the game.
The feud with Brooks Koepka has kept DeChambeau in the headlines in 2021, he missed the Olympics after testing positive for the new crown, and publicly quarreled with equipment sponsors at the British Open, accused of ‘like a 8-year-old child”.
The 2020 U.S. Open champion said in a December interview that at one point last year he “felt like he wanted to get out of the game. I’ve struggled with all kinds of things in the past, but I’m going to continue to learn and grow and take out the court.” Get out of trouble. That’s what I want, I don’t want to be a super controversial figure, I just want to be a respectable, inspiring person.”
DeChambeau won the U.S. Open by crushing Winged Foot, making him the favorite to win the Masters. “It changed my mind about everything, and I treated Augusta as a par 67.” He ended up barely 34th. “I was so nervous that I didn’t want to let people down, and everyone could give me a point or two, but I knew that wasn’t the case. Over time, I realized why I did it, why I did it, and how to continue to improve. A friend enlightened me, and over time, it all went away and I became myself again. There was a time when I was very unhappy, especially frustrated, disappointed and sad.”
Although DeChambeau is the most high-profile player in golf, he and other players have not agreed to participate in Netflix’s new PGA Tour documentary. Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Colin Morikawa, Tommy Fleetwood and Koepka have all signed on to film.
DeChambeau, 28, added: “We didn’t have a deal in my favor, I love Netflix, it gave me a good time, but for me it’s not right at the moment. I think people Seeing me on social media, getting a good look at my life, it’s close to the limit for me, and it’s just too aggressive for me in general.”
