Gossip entrepreneur Fabrizio Corona is under investigation following defamation complaints lodged by Roma striker Stephan El Shaarawy and Lazio defender Nicolò Casale. During the television broadcast The news spreads Corona had said that the two players would be involved in the case of alleged illicit betting involving some Italian players. Corona had also sued Juventus defender Federico Gatti, who however did not file a complaint. Professional footballers are prohibited from betting on football matches, even those in which they are not involved, and violating the rule can lead to a long disqualification.
El Shaarawy and Casale have denied any involvement in the betting case, and in their complaint they also ask the magistrates to evaluate the possibility that Corona’s behavior could be considered as slander or revelation of official secrecy, due to the revelation of the minutes he handed over to the Turin prosecutor’s office, which is handling the case. At the moment the only players who are under investigation in relation to the matter are the first three of whom we had news, namely Nicolò Fagioli, Sandro Tonali and Nicolò Zaniolo.
