Four World Cups, four gold medals at the Olympics and various other various trophies around the globe: the US women’s national football team is undoubtedly the most successful of all time. Yet it took six long years with a full court case to prove the great value of the national women’s team which, in 2016, led by five representatives Alex Morgan, Megan Rapinoe, Becky Sauerbrunn, Hope Solo and Carli Lloyd filed a complaint with the Commission for equal employment opportunities for inequality in pay and treatment.
And finally an agreement has been reached that defining historical could also seem simplistic, between the USWNT and the USSF, or the United States Women National Team and the United States Soccer Federation with an amount that will be distributed according to the methods proposed by the players, approved by the district court. The agreement provides for the allocation of 24 million dollars to be divided into 22 million that will be given to the players as compensation for discrimination that has occurred over the years, while the remaining 2 million will be part of a fund for the benefit of the players themselves for their path at the end of their career and for everything concerning the activities they will carry out in the development of women’s sport.
Under the terms of the agreement, the US Soccer Federation has also committed to providing equal pay for men and women in all friendlies and tournaments, including the World Cup.
The satisfaction is enormous for Megan Rapinoe, the most representative US player: “This is a great victory, because not only the wrongs of the past will be corrected, but a better future will be guaranteed for the next generation who can really dream of something great. We are truly in the midst of an incredible turning point in women’s sport ”.
The very famous striker Alex Morgan also spoke, recalling that the work is not finished: “It is a moment of pride for all of us. Our football has agreed to equalize the cash prizes, but we are now asking FIFA to do so too. This is the next goal ”.
