Rogelio Funes Mori’s departure from Monterrey has been officially confirmed as he left the club to join Pumas. Before boarding the plane to Mexico City, Funes Mori shared the truth behind his departure, stating that the board did not want him anymore, despite being in the plans of coach Fernando “Tano” Ortiz and his staff.
The naturalized Mexican Argentine revealed that he did not appreciate the way he was treated by the board, even though he holds the historic scoring record for Rayados. He emphasized that he was not treated like Tigres’ André-Pierre Gignac.
Despite having six months left on his contract, Funes Mori made the decision to leave Monterrey and join Pumas during the Clausura 2024 season. This decision comes after the club did not want to renew his contract, despite the coach’s desire to keep him.
Funes Mori expressed his disappointment with the club for not treating him as a historical figure and announced his new challenge with Pumas. He mentioned that it will be a great loss to leave Rayados and their fans, but he is looking forward to the new opportunity with Pumas.
While Gremio also made an offer, Funes Mori chose to stay in the Mexican league and join Pumas. He is hopeful that his performance with Pumas will earn him a chance to be called up to the Mexican National Team in the future.
Despite leaving Monterrey, Funes Mori expressed that he will always be connected to the club and hopes to return in the future.
