Jorre Verstraeten was unable to win a bronze medal in the 60 kilogram class at the Grand Slam judo in the Uzbek capital Tashkent on Friday afternoon. In the battle for bronze, our compatriot lost on penalties to the Turk Salih Yildiz (IJF 20). Fourteen seconds before the end he ran into a third shido.

Verstraeten, number seventeen in the world, was bye in the first round and then started with a win with ippon in the Golden Score against the Uzbek Bakhrom Boturov (IJF 92). He then passed the Russian Gamzat Zairbekov (IJF 36) with waza-ari. After an ippon from the Frenchman Romain Valadier Picard (IJF 12) in the quarter-finals, Verstraeten was sent to the repechages. There his Kazakh opponent Yeldos Smetov (IJF 31) forfeited.
In the women’s class up to 57 kilograms, 26-year-old Mina Libeer (IJF 33) was eliminated in the second round with waza-ari by the Slovenian Kaja Kajzer (IJF 23). In the first round she had passed Tajik Fazilat Gulboeva (IJF 226) with waza-ari.
Matthias Casse will compete on Saturday in the 81 kg class. Sami Chouchi (-90 kg) and Toma Nikiforov (-100 kg) have to take to the tatami on Sunday.
