Halstenberg hits and flies: Hannover fights for victory against passionate Rostockers

Hannover 96 got their second win in a row against Hansa Rostock. The Lower Saxony team prevailed 2-1 (1-1) in a disjointed northern duel on Sunday. Marcel Halstenberg scored the winning goal, but also saw a red card. The game was interrupted for a long time in the first half due to protests.

Halstenberg became the tragic hero of the game within eleven minutes. First Hannover’s central defender scored the celebrated 2-1 twelve minutes before the end of the game after a corner from birthday boy Derrick Köhn. In the 89th minute, however, he was sent off with a red card after a completely unnecessary kick in midfield and will be missed by the “Reds” in the coming weeks.

Two mistakes, two goals, long interruption

Two Rostock players had previously scored the goals: Kevin Schumacher also scored into his own goal after a Köhn corner (4th). Kai Pröger equalized after a serious mistake by 96 goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler (45th+4).

As was the case the day before with the HSV game in Berlin, the encounter in Hanover was interrupted for a long time after tennis balls flew onto the grass from the Lower Saxony corner in stages from the twelfth minute onwards in protest against the planned investment of investors in the DFL. Referee Alexander Sather stopped the game eight times before sending both teams to the dressing room for eight minutes in the 24th minute.

Schumacher hits his own goal

The Lower Saxony team got off to a dream start because the Mecklenburgers scored into their own goal: striker Junior Brumado and midfielder Schumacher got in the way of their own five-yard box after a corner from Köhn and the ball bounced off Schumacher’s thigh into the goal. The early 96 lead (4th).

The hosts were good in the game, which only progressed in stop-and-go mode for around 20 minutes from the twelfth minute due to the protest: In one of the short phases of the game, Köhn tested Hansa goalkeeper Markus Kolke (19th).

Zieler misses, Pröger equalises

Even after the restart, the “Reds” remained the more pleasant and dangerous team: Nicolo Tresoldi directed a free-kick cross from Enzo Leopold from the left side just over the FCH goal (29th), Kolja Oudenne left the best opportunity to do so with a header 2-0 unused (41st).

The hosts missed their chances, Rostock had no chance to equalize because this time a Hanoverian made a mistake: keeper Zieler played directly into the foot of the onrushing Pröger. The Hansa striker only needed to tip the ball into the goal to make it 1-1 (45th+4). After a total of 66 minutes – the usual length of a tennis set with a tiebreak – a memorable first half ended.

Kolke saves against Voglsammer

Pröger was also in the spotlight immediately after the restart: 96 midfield clearer Fabian Kunze blocked his shot for a corner in desperate need (48′). The Mecklenburgers were now better in the game, pushed the hosts higher and involved them in many duels.

The flow of the game was now finally gone, also because Hannover lacked the ideas to break up the densely staggered FCH defense. 96 coach Stefan Leitl reacted and brought on Andreas Voglsammer, who almost immediately gave Lower Saxony their second lead, but was denied by Kolke (70′).

Halstenberg hits and flies off the pitch

Eight minutes later, the FCH keeper was beaten: Halstenberg ran from the six-yard box parallel to the baseline to the far post, exactly where Köhn’s ball went. He powerfully headed in to make it 2-1 (78′).

But Hansa didn’t give up – and deserved a point. But Zieler made up for his mistake with two brilliant saves. First he deflected a header from Dennis Dressel around the post (81′), then he made a strong save from Sveinn Gudjohnsen (83′). After Halstenberg’s red card (88th), the Rostock team were in the majority, but they were no longer dangerous in front of the goal. “It’s just nice to get three points, even if it’s with two standards. We’ll take everything with us,” said Zieler.
