“I want to stay here, but it has to be better”: Ronny Deila is clear about his future at Club Brugge and has good news about Simon Mignolet

“It is my responsibility, and the results must be better.” Club Brugge coach Ronny Deila delivered a mea culpa in the run-up to the vital match against Genk. However, he was clear about his future: according to him, a dismissal is not an option. “My position? I want to stay here and fight.” In the meantime, there was good news about Mignolet.

It was once again busy in the press room of the Belfius Basecamp, where two press people usually look ahead to the upcoming match with Ronny Deila every week. The Norwegian is under heavy pressure at Club Brugge: that is an understatement. The title and cup are already gone, blue and black actually have to fight for the Champions’ Play-offs. And this for the second year in a row. “Union was a repeat of what we have experienced in recent weeks,” said Deila. “But it is my responsibility. I totally wear that. The results must be better and it must change.”

“We can do it, we have already shown that”

Deila was remarkably honest and had completely changed his discourse of the last few weeks – which was often resigned and negative. “We must also remain honest: it is not all bad. Everything is going well between the two boxes, but we are just not efficient enough around the goals. We have already proven that we can score. And keep clean sheets. Do you remember that series without conceding goals? We can do it, you know. That is why we must keep the confidence. It’s about the little details and giving everything during training.”

It will probably matter to the fans: they want to see results. “I understand that this is extremely frustrating for them,” Deila nodded. “But we’re going to fight. I see a group that wants to stand up. The will is there, but the results are just not good enough. We must become more demanding of each other. The cup elimination was a huge disappointment, but the season is not over yet. We are third and still participating in Europe. Our first focus now must be to achieve European football.”

Will Deila still be the coach of Club Brugge next year? That remains to be seen. If it were up to the coach himself, he would stay. “I want to stay here, I want to fight. The first year at a new club is never easy. People become better from difficult moments,” says Deila. “There was no special discussion with the board. Just the normal stuff. Of course, they also see what is going well and what is not going so well. The criticism of my person? I don’t care. The only thing that keeps me awake is the result on Sunday. We definitely want to win and get those three points. We have that in our own hands, and not what the outside world thinks.”

About Mignolet’s injury: “He has a sprain”

A bright spot: Simon Mignolet has not suffered a tear. “He has a first-degree sprain,” says Deila. “Genk will come too early anyway, but we will see if we can get him ready for Molde.” It is not yet clear who will be under the bar on Sunday. “It is close between Jackers and Bursik,” it sounds. “We are going to have a few more conversations on Saturday and then make the decision. They have a different style, but we have two good options.”
