The team of interim national coach Horst Hrubesch is fifth in the rankings at the draw on March 20th in Paris, with Japan and Olympic champion Canada in pot two. Two nations from the same confederation should not be represented in any group, so the only opponent from pot one with hosts France and world champions Spain is the USA.
Brazil, Australia and Colombia are in the third pot. In addition to New Zealand, two African teams will be drawn into the groups from pot four and will have to qualify by the beginning of April. The division into the different pots was based on placement in the world rankings.
