Italian tennis player Matteo Berrettini withdrew from the Australian Open, which is taking place in Melbourne, shortly before his first match against Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas. The cause of his withdrawal is an injury to his left foot which had already forced him to withdraw from the preparatory tournament in Brisbane. The Australian Open is one of the four Grand Slam tournaments, the most important of the season. Berrettini had attempted to recover and went to Melbourne to train anyway, but just under twenty-four hours before the match against Tsitsipas he announced his retirement.
