Liu Huanhua Makes History by Breaking Two Weightlifting World Records

Last night, the 2024 Weightlifting World Cup in Phuket, Thailand witnessed an extraordinary performance by Chinese weightlifter Liu Huanhua. Liu not only clinched the clean and jerk and total score gold medals in the men’s 102kg competition but also shattered two world records in the process.

Despite initially ranking fifth in the snatch category with a score of 181 kg, Liu Huanhua showcased his unparalleled strength during the clean and jerk competition. In his first lift, he secured the gold medal by effortlessly lifting 220 kilograms. Building on this success, Liu lifted 225 kilograms in his second attempt, further boosting his confidence. In a bold move, Liu decided to lift 232 kilograms in his third attempt, surpassing the existing world record for clean and jerk.

Prior to Liu’s remarkable feat, the world records in the men’s 102 kg category were set by the International Weightlifting Federation in 2018, with marks of 191 kg in the snatch, 231 kg in the clean and jerk, and a total score of 412 kg. However, these records remained unchallenged for several years. Liu’s outstanding performance at the 2024 World Cup saw him break the clean and jerk and total score world records at this level with a total of 413 kilograms.
