Foss in the race

Tobias Foss from Norway is the next driver on the track who we have to keep a closer eye on today. The 26-year-old is considered a strong time trialist. When the first time was taken, nothing happened in the last few minutes and Černý continues to lead.

13:41

Fall of Andresen

Tobias Lund Andresen caused the first fall in this time trial stage. The Dane ends up on the ground in the first corner. But he can quickly get back on his bike and continue the stage.

13:40

The first intermediate times

The first intermediate times arrive. Josef Černý is in the lead after 18.6 kilometers. His first pursuer is Ryan Mullen, 36 seconds behind. Jimmy Janssens has already been overtaken by the Czech on the track.

13:36

Is Affini involved?

Edoardo Affini from Team Visma | Lease a Bike, on the other hand, doesn’t seem to be going for a win today, even though he is one of the good time trialists. He takes on the race in a completely different dynamic than Hoole before.

13:32

Denied leg rein

Daan Hoole from Team Lidl-Trek seems to have received clearance from his team today. The Dutchman puts in more from the first meter than we have seen from other drivers. 23 athletes are now in the race.

13:30

Walscheid also in the race

Max Walscheid from the Jayco AlUla team also got on his time trial bike and started the seventh stage of the Giro. However, his focus should not be on achieving a top result today either.

13:27

Bauhaus in the race

Now Phil Bauhaus, the first German cyclist, has set off on the journey. Things have been going well for the 29-year-old on the Tour of Italy so far. In the fourth stage, Bauhaus finished third on the podium, while in the fifth stage they came in a good seventh place.

13:26

Long time trial

Long time trials have become a rarity in modern cycling. The Giro d’Italia traditionally offers many time trial kilometers. However, this year’s time trial is the longest at the Giro since 2015. Back then, former world champion Vasil Kiryienka was the fastest after almost 60 kilometers.

13:22

Relaxed Jakobsen

Fabio Jakobsen from the dsm-unternehmenich PostNL team is already on the way. The previous Giro d’Italia certainly didn’t go as planned for the Dutchman. Jakobsen had to struggle a lot in many stages and should now concentrate on Sunday and not go all the way today.

13:18

Bauhaus first German driver

Phil Bauhaus from Bahrain Victorious will be the first German rider to take part in the time trial today. For him it starts at 1:27 p.m. Two minutes later, Maximilian Walscheid from Team Jayco AlUla is there. The last German racing cyclist to tackle the time trial is Georg Steinhauser from EF Education-EasyPost at 3:35 p.m.

13:14

Black geht von der Rampe

Josef Černý, one of the specialists in the individual time trial, has now also set out. The big question, however, will be whether he can put everything into it or whether he has to hold back with a view to tomorrow and then support his teammates as helpers again.

13:10

Let’s go!

The meal is ready and the first athlete sets off on the course with Julius van den Berg. The Dutchman worked for EF Education for many years before joining the dsm-unternehmenich PostNL team this year. His abilities lie primarily in sprinting. In the time trial, however, the 27-year-old is less of a force to be reckoned with, especially since he is not particularly keen on climbs. A total of 165 drivers are still there.

13:04

The ratings in numbers

Tadej Pogačar continues to wear the pink jersey of the overall leader. The Slovenian is 46 seconds ahead of Geraint Thomas. Daniel Martínez is 47 seconds behind in third place. Cian Uijtdebroeks and Einem Rubio are also within a minute of Pogačar. Pogačar also leads the mountains classification. Jonathan Milan is in the lead in the points standings.

12:56

How much does Pogačar put in?

Tadej Pogačar is certainly one of the favorites for the stage win today, but the question is how much the Slovenian will really put in, because after the very demanding time trial, the first real mountain stage of the tour is tomorrow, Saturday. On the other hand, Pogačar had also announced that he would use the time trial at the Giro to prepare for individual time trials at later tours this summer. So it will be interesting to see what Pogačar will come up with in the end.

12:48

The favorites

The stage offers a good opportunity for the time trial specialists: Tobias Foss (Ineos Grenadiers) starts at 1:41 p.m., Mikkel Berg (UAE Team Emirates) at 2:24 p.m. and Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) at 2:37 p.m. The race for the overall ranking will be held among the later starters: Lucas Plapp (Team Jayco AlUla) starts at 3:42 p.m., Ben O’Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) at 3:42 p.m. and Cian Uijtdebroeks (Visma-Lease a Bike ) at 4:15 p.m. This is then followed by the top 3 in the overall ranking. Daniel Martínez (Bora-Hansgrohe) is in demand from 4:18 p.m., Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadies) at 4:21 p.m. and Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) as the last driver at 4:24 p.m.

12:40

The route

The route runs 40.6 kilometers from Foligno to Perugia. The first 34 kilometers from the start in Foligno are flat. Immediately afterwards, the mountainous part of this time trial begins. A 4th category climb leads over 6.6 kilometers up to the finish in Perugia. However, the increase is not uniform. The first 1,300 meters to Casaglia have an average gradient of 12 percent. The climb then levels off before climbing again with a gradient of 11 percent 2,600 meters from the finish.

12:33

Welcome!

The first of two individual time trials at the Giro d’Italia takes place in today’s 7th stage. The first driver, Julius van den Berg from the dsm-unternehmenich PostNL team, will go to the starting ramp in Folingo at 1:10 p.m.
