Mediterranean Games – Italy without gold: 5 silvers and 2 bronzes on the second day in Oran

Many podiums, but no golds. Italy’s spoils at the Mediterranean Games in Oran rose to 12 medals. On the second day in Algeria, five silvers arrived with Mirco Minguzzi in the Greco-Roman wrestling, Silvia Semeraro in karate, the men’s gymnastics team (Marco Lodadio, Nicola Bartolini, Lay Giannini, Lorenzo Casali, Matteo Levantesi), the women’s doubles in badminton ( Katharina Fink and Yasmine Hamza) and the female table tennis team (Nicole Arlia, Giorgia Piccolin and Nikoleta Stefanova). Silvia Semeraro touches the feat in the -68 kg losing 2-0 to eternal rival Feryal Abdelaziz, the first Egyptian woman to win Olympic gold (Tokyo2020). Previously the blue had won against the Slovenian Kiti Smilijan (4-0) and the Turkish Eda Eltemur (1-1). Instead she stops at the foot of the podium of +68 kg Aurora Crivelli despite the excellent performance in the final for the bronze then won at the end by the Turkish Meltem Hocaoglu Akyol (5-4). The Italians had beaten the Cypriots Eva Nour Kattiritzi and Eleni Christodoulou 2-0 in the semifinal (21-16,21-17). In the men’s tournament bronze medal for Fabio Caponio and Giovanni Toti defeated in the semifinals 1-2 (21-17; 15-21; 19-21) after a tough battle with the Spaniards Luis Enrique Penalver Pereira and Pablo Abian Vicen.

The women’s team, made up of Nicole Arlia, Giorgia Piccolin and Nikoleta Stefanova, after a very tight final fails to win over Egypt: the final result is 2-3 (4-11; 11-5; 8-11; 12-10; 8-11). The Italian trio previously beat Tunisia 3-0 and Portugal 3-2 in the semifinal.

The Greco-Roman fight was expected with 4 finals, 1 for gold and 3 for bronze. Mirco Minguzzi, brother of the Olympic gold medalist in Beijing 2008 Andrea, wins silver in the -87 kg. Nothing can be done against Algerian home idol Bachir Sid Azara who dominates the match 5-0. Bronze for Ruben Marvice in the 60 kg, victorious over the Syrian Ahmad Alnakdali, disqualified for unsportsmanlike behavior on the blue advantage for 10-8.
