Mercedes Amg One: F1-derived Hypercar arrives in 2022

The sports division of Mercedes has written a letter to all customers who have already ordered the Amg One hypercar, confirming that the 275 units will go into production starting from mid-2022. A rather awaited news, given the numerous delays that have compromised the development of one of the most interesting and curious cars of recent years. the confirmation came from the magazines Autocar and Autoexpress. The One is equipped with the same power unit as the 2016 Formula 1 world champion single-seater. A considerable engineering challenge, which required continuous development and modifications in order to meet the increasingly stringent homologation requirements for anti-pollution regulations.

Mercedes presented the Amg Project One in 2017 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, managing to attract much of the attention during the event. The feature that separates the Amg project from all other vehicles produced to date is its power unit. It is a plug-in hybrid structure closely derived from Formula 1: the propulsion system is the same that equipped the Mercedes-Amg F1 W07 Hybrid single-seater that won the world championship in 2016. The heat engine is a combined 1.6-liter V6 with four electric motors for a total power of over a thousand horses. Mercedes has officially communicated to all 275 customers that the start of production is confirmed for mid-2022.

Among the main causes of delay, the difficulties encountered in the approval phase. Such a sophisticated power unit must undergo a profound evolution in order to meet the homologation parameters for road use. Amg engineers had to work hard to meet these requirements, without compromising on performance. Another challenge was reducing the combustion engine’s minimum rpm: its application on the Formula 1 single-seater did not allow it to go below 5,000 rpm. A value incompatible with a production car and reducing it to around 1,200 rpm was one of the most demanding difficulties that the AMG technicians had to face. In addition, the car that will circulate on the road must guarantee a zero-emission range of at least 25 km, as stated at the presentation stage. All 275 models have already been sold, each at a price of 2.27 million euros.
