He was the celebrated goalscorer to make it 1-1 in the 18th minute – and he was the tragic hero in the 70th: We’re talking about Serge Gnabry. The FC Bayern player scored the all-important equalizer in the Champions League quarter-finals against his former club FC Arsenal (2-2) – and also impressed with his defensive work: he helped as much as he could, the Gunners’ strong right side to some extent to keep in check. The 28-year-old was one of the best Bayern players alongside Leroy Sané and Leon Goretzka. But then Gnabry had to go out injured – as he has done so often this season, which is increasingly turning into an epidemic season for the attacker.
According to initial predictions, Gnabry tore a muscle fiber in London. “He has another thigh injury and is definitely out,” said coach Thomas Tuchel. “We now have to find a solution for next week,” said the 50-year-old seriously, with a view to the quarter-final second leg on June 17th. Gnabry’s season was marked by injuries
Did the FC Bayern coach leave the 28-year-old on the field for too long? Only a month ago Gnabry made his comeback against Mainz – after an almost three-month break. Gnabry, who had never played the full distance this season, had to continue playing – until the 70th minute, when he was treated for his thigh on the pitch and ultimately had to go out injured.
Time until the European Championships is running out
The injury comes at a bad time for Gnabry. Because the offensive player was just about to jump on the European Championship bandwagon. National coach Julian Nagelsmann did not take the 28-year-old, who missed 20 Bayern games this season, into account for the March international matches. But Gnabry, who spoke this week of a “difficult” season for him personally, has scored four goals and one assist in the six competitive games since his return. He was recently back in Bayern’s starting line-up twice and impressed. “My fitness level is generally good,” he said on Monday.
With strong performances at the end of the season he could have promoted himself again to Nagelsmann. But nothing will come of it for now. Gnabry is threatened with a break of several weeks – the time until the home European Championship is running out. Nagelsmann is expected to announce his European Championship squad on May 17th.
