Paris Olympics Countdown: Official Mascot “Friget” Products Launch in China

Xinhua News Agency, Shanghai, April 17 (Reporters Xu Dongyuan and Xia Liang) – With just 100 days left until the start of the Paris Olympics, official licensed products, including the mascot “Friget,” have been launched in mainland China. These products were exclusively available on Tmall, the official Olympic flagship store.

The announcement was made by Yu Danli, general manager of the marketing department and marketing platform of Taotian Group’s Tmall Division. The launch event was attended by officials from the International Olympic Committee, the Shanghai Organizing Committee of the Olympic Qualification Series, the French Consul General in Shanghai, and representatives of several Olympic sponsor brands.

The mascot “Friget” is inspired by the Phrygian hat, a symbol of French culture, reflecting the country’s historical and cultural heritage. The first batch of licensed products includes a plush toy, a figure posing with the Eiffel Tower, and commemorative silver coins.

China’s role in the Olympic qualifying series leading to Paris 2024 was highlighted with Shanghai as the competition venue. This decision not only showcases China’s importance on the international sports stage but also provides the opportunity for the public to witness high-level international events at home.

As 2022 marks the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and France, João Valladou, the French Consul General in Shanghai, emphasized the importance of sports in bilateral relations. He noted the potential for cooperation in cultivating young athletes, developing sports infrastructure, and sharing expertise in the sports industry.
