Petrol and diesel prices: flat summer, but in September they start to rise again

by admin

In July and August, the cost of fuel remained essentially stable after the surge in June. But the readings at the beginning of September show signs of an upward trend, with prices at the level of three years ago

Fuel prices did not register the usual mid-summer increase, the one that generally characterized the pre-exodus period between July and August. This year there was no summer blaze, but it must be said that the oil sector was affected by an almost constant upward trend, which began in November 2020 with a pause recorded in April 2021. Then a slow increase that in the month of July reached its maximum, with values that had not been recorded since October 2018. A consequence of the equally constant increase in the price of oil, which from the minimum peak reached in April 2020 (in full lockdown global) has caught up with the improvement of the health framework and the recovery of consumption and transport. An important role was also played by the depletion of accumulated stocks and the production cuts established by the producing countries.

THE TREND IN THE PRICE OF OIL

To give some numbers, the European Brent from the beginning of September 2020 to the beginning of September 2021 went from 42 to 72 dollars a barrel; similar speech for the American WTI, which went from 39 to 71 dollars in the last twelve months. Consequently, albeit with a less rapid progression, even petrol and diesel are repositioning themselves on levels that we had forgotten in the last year. The monthly surveys of the Ministry of Economic Development updated to 6 September report an average price of gasoline of 1.655 euros per liter (it was 1.599 euros at the beginning of June and 1.398 a year ago), diesel fuel stood at 1.504 euros / liter (it was 1.457 euros). at the beginning of June, 1,281 a year ago).
