Rome, 19 October 2021 – Old is who it feels like. A statement like this will one day probably be remembered in the books of famous phrases uttered by the Queen Elizabeth II, which despite i 95 years old sounded refused just with similar words a prize aimed at most illustrious elders. It was offered by the British magazine ‘The Oldie’, dedicated to the elderly, and the name of the award certainly did not ring well in the monarch’s still well-functioning ears: ‘Oldie of the Year award’, therefore an almost insolent ‘Award to the old man of the year ‘.
Elizabeth instructed her personal secretary, Tom Laing-Baker, with the response – transmitted on August 21st from the Scottish royal summer residence of Balmoral, who replied in a courteous but firm manner, reporting precisely what the sovereign said: “Her Majesty believes that a person is as old as he feels, the queen therefore does not believe she meets the relevant criteria to be able to accept, and hopes that you will find a more suitable recipient. “Recipient identified, in the end, by the magazine in the famous Franco-American star of Hollywood cinema Leslie Caron, who is 90 years old: five less than Elizabeth.
The daughter of George VI has sat on the throne of St. James for almost 70 years, but she has never publicly celebrated, except on official occasions, the numerous records broken in dexterity. When, for example, it became the Britain’s longest-lived monarch in September 2015, he spent the day like any other, inaugurating a new railway line. It almost seems that this real refusal of which the news has come out, is a sort of involuntary response to what has been circulated in the press in recent days: some very normal signs of aging which, however, the sovereign, always active and in great shape, faces with an enviable ease. In recent public engagements she was first seen with a stick for walking, although it has no walking problems but you use it on the most uneven surfaces. According to a gossip, her doctors would have asked her for health reasons not to drink more glasses of alcoholic, starting with the beloved Martini.
In addition to his excellent health, he can also count on a certain tradition of longevity in the family, since husband Philip, who passed away at the age of 99 (mourning which in any case made the sovereign a little tired), to the Queen Mother, who passed away when she was 102.
In front of Elizabeth, however, there is a season full of public commitments, such as the presence of Her Majesty at the international conference on climate CoP26 of Glasgow, in the British presidency, in two weeks. To then get to those that will lead up to the celebrations in 2022 of the so-called Platinum Jubilee: the 70th anniversary of the accession to the throne. For her, perhaps another day like any other, in which not so much the years chase each other but the memories of a lifetime.
