Search for a coach in Munich: Bayern and waiting for Rangnick’s “yes”.

As of: April 24, 2024 9:54 a.m

At the beginning of April, Ralf Rangnick did not confirm contact with FC Bayern Munich and even publicly expressed disinterest. Now the current Austrian national coach is said to be the preferred candidate for the coaching position at the record champions.

According to the Austrian daily newspaper Kurier, Ralf Rangnick is currently “THE preferred candidate” for the position of Bayern coach. This corresponds to information from BR24Sport, according to which, internally, sports director Christoph Freund is said to be Rangnick’s biggest advocate, whom he knows well from his time at Red Bull Salzburg and whose successor he became sports director at RB Salzburg.

Negotiations will soon take place with the Austrian association about a transfer fee for its team boss. However, the ÖFB apparently does not want to release Rangnick from his existing contract, which runs until the 2026 World Cup, without a fight: “Ralf Rangnick has a valid contractual relationship,” said ÖFB sports director Peter Schöttel in response to a SID request and emphasized: “The ÖFB has no requests before.” The ÖFB’s full focus is on EURO 2024.

If Rangnick wanted to, he would be Thomas Tuchel’s successor, various newspapers speculate. However, alongside Rangnick, Roberto de Zerbi from Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion is still in the running. Rangnick, however, just has to say “yes” and after the European Championships in the summer he will become the new coach of the German soccer record champions with Austria.

Max Eberl sees himself “on the finish line” when looking for a trainer

It would be the end of an almost endless search for a trainer with various twists and turns. After the rejections of Xabi Alonso (Bayer Leverkusen) and Julian Nagelsmann (DFB), Ralf Rangnick is now (again) the Munich team’s “favorite” in the so far fruitless search for a football teacher for the star ensemble of the Champions League semi-finalists.

Munich sports director Max Eberl reported last weekend that the club was on the “finish line” in its search. Those responsible had previously repeatedly emphasized that they would like to introduce the new man in April.

Ralf Rangnick’s change of heart?

However, Rangnick himself made negative comments at the beginning of the month. When asked whether he had already spoken to those responsible at FC Bayern, the long-time Bundesliga coach said at a media event in Düsseldorf: “No. Why should I? I feel comfortable here. I still have a contract until 2026. Our goal and path will continue after the EURO.”

Apparently there was a meeting between him, Eberl and Munich sports director Christoph Freund a few weeks ago.
