Serie B, playoffs and playouts: dates and pairings

Filed the last day of Serie B, now it’s playoff and playout time to determine the third promotion to Serie A and the fourth relegation to C.

Pisa and Monza close in third and fourth place and will return directly to the field for the semifinals. The teams from fifth to eighth place must also play the preliminary round: Brescia will face Perugia, Ascoli will face Benevento. Pisa will then challenge the winner between Ascoli and Benevento, while Monza will find the winner between Brescia and Perugia. The best placed team always has the right to play the second leg at home.

Preliminary round in single race: Friday 13 May at 20:30 Ascoli-Benevento; Saturday 14 May at 6 pm Brescia-Perugia. In the event of a tie in the 90th minute, it goes to extra time but not to penalties if even at the end of extra time the X resists. At that point, the team with the best position in the standings would qualify for the final. Semifinals (round trip): Tuesday 17 May at 20.30 winning Ascoli-Benevento / Pisa; Saturday 21 May at 6 pm Pisa / winning Ascoli-Benevento. Wednesday 18 May at 7pm Brescia-Perugia / Monza winner; Sunday 22 May at 6 pm Monza / Brescia-Perugia winner. In the event of a tie after 180 ‘, the goal difference in the two games will be decisive, but the rule of goals scored away from home will not apply and are worth double. If there is a tie even considering the goal difference, the team with the best position in the standings qualifies for the final. Therefore, extra time and penalties will not be played.

Final (round trip): Thursday 26 May at 20.30 and Sunday 29 May at 20.30. At the end of the two finals, if the score in the goal difference is still equal, the points obtained during the regular season become decisive. If the two teams have closed the regular season with the same points (this is the case of Pisa and Monza), we go to extra time and penalties to establish the third promoted.

Cosenza and Vicenza will play for salvation. Thursday 12 May 2022 the first leg to Veneto, Friday 20 May the return to Cosenza. If at the end of the 180 ‘there is no winner, the criteria are the same as those applied in the playoffs: salvation depends on the best goal difference in the two games and, in the event of a tie, on the best placement in the standings.
