The silver women, super Paternoster in the elimination competition
ROUBAIX. Another Italian enterprise of track cycling in this magical 2021: after winning gold in the team pursuit at the Tokyo Olympics, Filippo Ganna, Simone Consonni, Liam Bertazzo and Jonathan Milan also repeat themselves at the Roubaix World Championships. The blue quartet overtakes the host France in the final, bringing the world title back to Italy after 24 years.
Together with the men, great result in the team pursuit also for the girls: Chiara Consonni, Elisa Balsamo, Martina Alzini and Martina Fidanza get a historic silver behind only the very strong Germany, which is reigning Olympic champion.
However, a gold for women’s Italy arrives on this day of the World Championships in Roubaix: thanks to Letizia Paternoster who puts a legendary gold medal around her neck in the pursuit. The 22-year-old Italian resists until the end and in the final two laps she accomplishes the masterpiece ahead of the Belgian Kopecky and the American Valente. For Paternoster it is the redemption medal after the Olympic disappointments.
