Iranian Taghi Askari, at the ripe old age of one hundred, dived from the 1 meter springboard shortly before the women’s 3 meter final of the World Swimming Championships in the Hamad Aquatic Center in Doha. Awarded on the podium with a gold medal, he was unable to hold back tears of emotion.

In two weeks he is scheduled to participate in the Masters championships, again in Qatar. Askari took part in the Asian Games in New Delhi in 1951, winning silver from the platform and bronze from the three meters. He retired from competition at 41, i.e. 59 years ago.
