Decades before the kittens became the stars of YouTube and social networks, an English artist made them the main object of his drawings, becoming famous thanks to them: his true story is told in the film ‘The Electrical Life of Louis Wain’, with Benedict Cumberbatch as the protagonist. It comes out in streaming on Amazon Prime Video on Friday 5 November, bringing with it average positive reviews.
The Electrical Life of Louis Wain, tutto sul film
The plot follows the story of
Louis Wain (1860-1939), which became famous thanks to its drawings of cats with eyes larger than normal and with attitudes and sometimes anthropomorphic features. Artistic merits and commercial success that went hand in hand with
precarious mental health: today it is debated whether or not Wain suffered from schizophrenia, without being able to definitively pronounce on the diagnosis. In any case, he spent the last period of his life in a psychiatric hospital, where he died at the age of 78.
‘The Electrical Life of Louis Wain’ was written by
Will Sharpe e Simon Stephenson, with the former also engaged in the role of director and relying on the experience gained directing the films ‘Black Pond’ and ‘The Darkest Universe’. For his part, Setphenson is on his first real script after having written the subject of the animated film ‘Luca’ and having worked on some parts of ‘Paddington 2’. The cast of ‘The Electrical Life of Louis Wain’ is very respectable:
Benedict Cumberbatch is world famous as an interpreter of Doctor Strange in the Marvel superhero cinematic universe and as Sherlock Holmes of the TV series ‘Sherlock’ (he was also nominated for an Oscar for ‘The Imitation Game’). Next to him we find
Claire Foy (‘The Crown’),
Andrea Riseborough (‘Birdman’) e
Toby Jones (‘The mole’).

Reviews and how to watch the movie
‘The Electrical Life of Louis Wain’
has divided the criticism, with some reviewers enthusiastic, others less so, and others downright unhappy. Trying to summarize in a few lines what is written in the various newspapers, we can say that Benedict Cumberbatch and Claire Foy liked it a lot, that the film has heart and sweetness, but that it stiffens when it decides to account for the true facts that inspired it. , tending to be a bit scholastic (there are those who argued that a work only vaguely inspired by the real Louis Wain would have been better). In any case, and differences of opinion aside, the average vote on Metacritic is 61/100.
‘The Electrical Life of Louis Wain’
lasts 111 minutes and to watch it, just search for it in the Amazon Prime Video streaming content catalog starting November 5.
