The International Olympic Committee Executive Committee officially approved the Tokyo Olympic refugee delegation list in Lausanne, Switzerland on the 8th local time. A total of 29 athletes will participate in 12 events in Tokyo.
International Olympic Committee President Bach said that these refugee athletes from all over the world stepped onto the stage of the Tokyo Olympics as a powerful message of unity, tenacity and hope to the world.
At the Tokyo Olympics, 29 athletes will compete under the Olympic flag. At the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games on July 23, they will follow the Greek delegation and enter as second place. It is understood that 6 of these 29 people have participated in the Rio Olympics.
The members of the Tokyo Olympic refugee delegation will meet in Doha, Qatar from July 12 to July 13, and fly to Japan on July 14.
It is reported that at the 2016 Rio Olympics, the International Olympic Committee organized a refugee delegation for the first time. At that time, 10 athletes participated in the competition. In 2018, the International Olympic Committee decided to follow this approach in the Tokyo Olympics and created the Olympic Refugee Athlete Funding Program, which has successively funded 56 refugee athletes who meet the requirements to help them continue their sports career.
