These are the data drawn for The sun 24 hours by the Digital Observatory which, in addition to having drawn up the social podium for total number of followers, has also drawn up the ranking of the most followed athletes on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. But let’s go into detail.
The most digital Olympic Games ever
We have known for some time that the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games were the most digital in history. The Covid and the impossibility of having full stands and being close to competitions, even analogically speaking, have however multiplied the need of many fans to follow them through digital tools and social media marketing in particular.
All Federations and athletes have for some time been equipped with channels, accounts and fan pages to communicate and converse with the general public and now, on the occasion of the 32nd edition of the Olympic Games, we have analyzed the activities of Italian athletes qualified for the great event. «The analysis was able to detect only the number of followers – says Sandro Giorgetti director of the Digital Observatory – as many athletes, especially on Instagram, do not have a business account and therefore the relative performances are not traceable. However it is not surprising that everyone has an Instagram account while some neglect Facebook and others Twitter; much less is the presence on Youtube and TikTok ».

The podium for total number of followers
For the total number of followers, the gold medal goes to Federica Pilgrims, at its fifth Olympics. The Venetian swimmer boasts over 2 million followers by adding Instagram and Twitter since she is present on Facebook only with her fan club which in any case has 267 thousand followers (not counted in the table above). Silver medal to basketball player Danilo Gallinari who, thanks to his long career in the NBA, exceeds 1.5 million followers. A share that is also reaching the bronze medal of social media (almost 1.5 million), Vincenzo Nibali, fresh from the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France, in his fourth Olympics. Then Ivan follows Zaytsev, the czar of Italian volleyball, also over a million followers (1.3 million), followed by tennis players Fabio Fognini (860mila) and Camila Giorgi (790 thousand). Surprising Niccolò Mannion, born in 2001 in his first season in the NBA and already with a total of 560 thousand social fans in tow.
The podium on Facebook
With Pellegrini, as already mentioned, out of the competition on Facebook, the gold medal is around the neck of Nibali which has 459 thousand fans, just over Gallinari (433 thousand), silver and of Zaytsev (427 thousand) which climbs to the lowest step of the podium. The number of followers of Camila Giorgi is truly remarkable (397 thousand) who, despite not boasting important successes as a tennis player, is very popular on social media, where it is her habit to post photos that are more model-style than sports.
The podium on Instagram
Here the national Federica tears up all the opponents. With 1 million and 300 thousand followers “kikkafede88”(This is her nick name) entertains her fans with photos and stories of her sporting activity, but also private and for a few years as a television personality who obviously made her known to a wider audience than she already had. Zaytsev climbs one step further, placing itself in second place with 785 thousand followers, while it is Fognini which wins the bronze medal with 584 thousand followers.
