Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard fell badly on the Tour of the Basque Country and had to give up the tour, as did Primoz Roglic and Remco Evenepoel. The race was interrupted for a long time and then neutralized. Only the finish sprint should be completed, the organizer said.

Vingegaard, Roglic and Evenepoel were among the favorites of the tour. The mass fall occurred on a descent in a curve at the front of the field. Vingegaard seemed to have had it the hardest, the Dane fell into a concrete ditch and was then transported away in an ambulance. TV images showed how Vingegaard was cared for by carers in a stable side position for several minutes.

Vingegaard conscious

Vingegaard’s team Visma – Lease a bike announced on the X platform that the Dane was conscious and should be examined more closely in hospital.

Evenepoel and Roglic didn’t seem to have it that bad. Evenpoel got back to his feet, but held his arm. Roglic also sat on the side of the road again and sat behind in the Bora-hansgrohe team vehicle. The crash occurred around 35 kilometers from the finish.

The tour, which ends on Saturday, is considered a preparatory race for the Tour de France for Vingegaard, Roglic and Evenepoel. In the overall ranking, Roglic was leading after three stages, Vingegaard was in fifth place.
