No victory in the first round of the TOTO Dutch Darts Masters for Dimitri Van den Bergh. The defending champion lost 3-6 to Gerwyn Price. Darts phenomenon Luke Littler qualified for the quarter-finals. The 17-year-old Englishman – who won in Bahrain last week – beat home player Dirk van Duijvenbode.

‘The DreamMaker’ won the tournament two years ago and threw excellently in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. Van den Bergh recorded no less than an average of 102 and five 180s. Price, however, was even better with an average of 103 and ‘The Iceman’ hit six out of eight doubles.

“Did I throw an average above 100?” Van den Bergh said afterwards. “Then I have achieved my goal for today. I gave it my all, so this is positive. It wasn’t perfect enough to win, especially in the second leg I missed some opportunities. Price was better again, which is a shame. But I am satisfied with my level. And I’m happy that I can play matches again. It felt like some kind of new love (laughs), which is the case with every first match of the year. And I’m going to take that strong average with me. Then you know that you can still break a lot of pots.”

With the Scot Peter Wright and the English Michael Smith and Rob Cross, three former world champions also died in the first round on Friday. All three were eliminated by a Dutchman. Wright lost 6-2 to Kevin Doets (PDC 62), Smith 6-3 to Gian van Veen (PDC 43) and Cross 6-5 to legend Raymond van Barneveld.

Luke Littler had little trouble with home player Dirk van Duijvenbode. ‘The Nuke’ actually received boos in Den Bosch, but responded by putting both hands behind his ears while his head appeared on the big screen. Like: bring it on. Littler then smashed in 180 with his first throw to win 6-2 with a finish of 150.
