I can probably write a post like this on a regular basis. And maybe I’ll do that too, after all, there’s no telling whether this messenger chaos will clear up at some point
There are almost 20 of us in the new ensemble, and it’s all about how best to reach everyone. To date, agreements have predominantly been made through personal contacts. There is also an incomplete mailing list, there has to be a better way.
The manager asks which messenger on the cell phone would be suitable. For a few meetings there is a piece of paper on which we all have to enter our cell phone numbers and tick which messengers we use. You can choose from WhatsApp, Signal and Threema. The manager says she doesn’t care, she’ll have them all.
All but two of the fellow musicians use WhatsApp. A fellow musician says, yes, okay, if he has to, he would install WhatsApp too. So far he has successfully blocked himself, but he already realizes that it would be stupid if he failed. One person says WhatsApp doesn’t work for him because he only uses a work cell phone. He couldn’t install WhatsApp on it because it was blocked.
The alternative Threema is not really popular with the majority, less because of the few euros it costs, but rather because several members have not set up a payment method in the Google Play or Apple App Store and don’t even know how to do it, “I I don’t even have a credit card,” etc.
Signal is praised as a free and privacy-friendly alternative, but the director has had enough of the discussions at this point and would rather continue making music with us. The topic will probably stay with us for a few more weeks and we will initially only make arrangements via personal contact, telephone, SMS, WhatsApp, email, etc.
