45W for 15€! Ikea SJÖSS 45W USB C charger in the test

With the SJÖSS, Ikea has brought a super interesting USB charger onto the market. Why is this interesting? Price/performance is the key word here.

The SJÖSS offers 2x USB C ports with an output of up to 45W, for around €15!

€15 for a 45W USB C charger from a trustworthy manufacturer like Ikea, who certainly do some testing with their chargers, is super exciting.

In short, I ordered the Ikea SJÖSS 45W USB C charger. Let’s take a look at this in the test!

Ikea SJÖSS 45W USB C Ladegerät im Test

The design of the Ikea SJÖSS is super simple and simple. We have a simple white USB charger, which doesn’t look “special” at first glance.

This also applies to processing. The white high-gloss housing is sufficiently solid, but it is also clear that we are not looking at a “premium” USB charger.

The same applies to the dimensions of 32 x 55 x 50 mm and the weight of 114g. The Ikea SJÖSS can certainly be described as compact, but it is also not extremely small or light for the power of up to 45W.

Anschlüsse des SJÖSS

The SJÖSS charger has 2x USB C ports.

USB C 1 / 2 – 45W USB Power Delivery – 5V/3A, 9V/3A, 12V/3A, 15V/3A, 20V/2,25A

Both USB C ports offer a power of up to 45W according to the USB Power Delivery standard. So it doesn’t matter which of the two ports you use, both have the same performance.

The USB Power Delivery standard is used, which is also used by Apple, Google, Samsung, Nintendo, etc. The Ikea SJÖSS is therefore fully compatible with common USB-C devices.

The power of up to 45W makes this particularly interesting for smartphones and tablets, as well as game consoles of all Steam Decks or Nintendo Switch.

45W oder 2x 22W

Both USB C ports on the SJÖSS offer up to 45W, but only if you use one of them. If you use both ports at the same time, they will be throttled to 22W each.

PPS is supported by SJÖSS

The SJÖSS supports the PPS extension of the USB Power Delivery standard.

This means that the SJÖSS can also quickly charge Samsung and Google Pixel smartphones, which require PPS for a high charging speed.

However, since the PPS level “only” goes up to 3A, the speed in combination with Samsung smartphones is limited to +- 25-28W.

So no, the Ikea SJÖSS cannot charge a Samsung S24 Ultra with 45W.

Stress test

I stress test all chargers at breaking. Here I put a charger at 100% load for x hours and see if there are any problems.

So I loaded the SJÖSS with the full 45W for 4 hours.

There were 0 problems or anomalies; the charger handled this load without any problems.

Suitable for which devices?

Expected charging speed Apple iPads +++ Apple iPhones +++ Apple MacBooks + Google Pixel +++ Huawei smartphones + OnePlus smartphones + Realme smartphones + Samsung Galaxy smartphones (“S” series) ++ Windows notebooks (Dell XPS, ASUS, etc. ) +

+++ = “perfect” maximum possible loading speed to be expected
++ = very high loading speed to be expected
+ = fast loading speed to be expected
0 = “Standard” loading speed to be expected
– = Slow loading speed to be expected
— = not compatible or only suitable to a very limited extent

Due to the power of 45W, the Ikea SJÖSS is initially well suited for all iPhones and iPads.

It is also very suitable for the Google Pixel models and the smaller Samsungs. However, Samsung smartphones can be charged with a maximum of +- 26W due to the “up to 3A” PPS level.

For most Samsung smartphones, however, this is already the full speed, as they cannot charge with more than 25W. However, the Ultra models cannot be charged with 45W on the SJÖSS.

With an output of up to 45W, the SJÖSS can also be used for smaller notebooks. I’m thinking of models like Dell XPS 13 or MacBook Pro 13 M1.

Tension stability

Voltage stability is no longer as important with USB C Power Delivery chargers as it used to be with USB A chargers.

However, the voltage values must of course remain within certain limits and a more stable voltage is always an indication of better electronics.

At the 9V and 20V levels, the voltage stability of the SJÖSS looks quite decent. At the 5V level we have a slightly larger jump, but nothing dramatic.

Efficiency des Ikea SJÖSS

High efficiency is important for many reasons. Here I measure and compare how much power the SJÖSS absorbs and how much it outputs. The closer these values are to each other, the less waste heat is produced and the protection on your wallet.

WOW! The efficiency of the Ikea SJÖSS looks fantastic! This fluctuated between 88.9% and 91.7% in the test.

These are outstanding values for a USB-C charger in this class. The minimum efficiency is particularly impressive.

For comparison, here are a few values for similar/comparable 45W USB C chargers:

And you can see that the Ikea SJÖSS is clearly the most efficient 45W charger, especially at low loads. The other models can only catch up at full load.

Conclusion

The Ikea SJÖSS is fantastic for a price of €15!

There are few reasons to buy a more expensive charger in this class. As advertised, the SJÖSS offers power of up to 45W. This is also constant without temperature problems.

In addition, PPS is even supported and the efficiency, especially at low loads, is one of the best in its class.

But are there any reasons to buy a more expensive 45W charger? The design and workmanship of the SJÖSS are rather simple. In addition, the charger cannot charge Samsung “Ultra” smartphones with 45W, but only with +- 26W.

If you don’t have a Samsung smartphone that can charge with up to 45W (or you don’t care) and the design suits you, then the Ikea SJÖSS is a great choice.
