Apple’s Vision Pro augmented reality glasses are now available for pre-order in the United States, with the company taking a unique approach by requiring head scans and visual prescriptions from potential customers. The glasses are set to hit the market on February 2, with three different models available for online purchase: a 256GB version for $3,500; a 512GB model for $3,700; and a 1TB option for $3,900.

During the pre-order process, customers must use their iPhone or iPad to scan their head in order for the glasses to properly fit the wearer. Additional optical inserts, including readers and prescription glasses, can also be added for an extra cost of $99 and $149, respectively.

In addition to the glasses, Apple is including additional accessories such as a lightweight sealing cushion, multiple head straps, and an external battery, which the company estimates will last up to two and a half hours.

International customers making purchases in the US will have limited access, as the device only supports English and requires Apple IDs located in that region for purchases in the App Store.

The technology company has high expectations for the Vision Pro, with Bloomberg reporting that it expects the glasses to generate $1.4 billion in revenue this year. While Apple plans to launch the glasses in other markets in late 2024, the UK and Canada are the leading candidates for the first sales outside the United States.

However, the Vision Pro does come with some limitations. For example, it will not be compatible with popular streaming applications like Netflix, Spotify, and YouTube at launch. Only other applications, such as Disney+, HBO Max, Peacock, and Amazon Prime Video, will be available.

The glasses were announced last year as a “spatial computing” device, allowing users to switch between full virtual reality and augmented reality, and are equipped with the EyeSight system, which lets the person’s eyes see through the screen on the front of the headset.

Analysts have projected limited initial demand, with some concerns about the device being viable only for Apple’s loyal fans and wealthiest customers, though the company is reportedly working on a cheaper model. The design of the glasses has also created manufacturing challenges for the company, leading to reduced production targets for 2024.

The pre-order availability of the Vision Pro glasses is a significant move for Apple as it continues to expand its product line and pursue innovation in the tech industry.
