Electric car charges electric car – is that possible? Yes that works.

Electric car charges electric car – is that possible? Yes that works.

I’m currently testing the Genesis GV60 in detail. I was interested in taking a closer look at the V2L function of the E-GMP platform and taking full advantage of it. I had already tried something similar with the Ioniq 5, but here again in more detail with some pictures and information: Can I charge an electric car with an electric car? YES – it works and here I show how.

Bidirectional?

Attention, V2L means I can operate an AC load directly via the electric car. Bidirectional and network-parallel operation is therefore not possible; I explain the exact differences in this article.

Genesis GV60 bidirectionally charges a VW ID.4

Initial situation

The Genesis supplies the Juice Booster 2 via the V2L adapter

Test

In order to maximize the Genesis GV60’s vehicle-2-load function, I use a Juice Booster 2 with a Schuko adapter. This means I can draw 13A and am limited to the limitation of T13. I plug this into the V2L adapter from Genesis (identical to EV6 and Ioniq 5) and can then select the maximum current. Of course we want to max it out and set 13A. On the other side of type 2 there is a VW ID.4 which is then charged with 2.9kW. The corresponding discharge is also specified in the GV60, so the transfer from one battery to the other works, albeit with losses due to two conversions from DC to AC to DC.

The Juice Booster serves as a drawer adapter.

Conclusion

A successful quick test, V2L can be used to charge another electric car. The function is certainly not very efficient and is recommended for everyday use, but it can still be very helpful in emergency situations…
