Four months later, the Oversight Board finally ruled on Biden’s fake video, claiming that the footage respect Meta’s rules on altered content. Facebook was therefore right not to remove it, also because the manipulation “is obvious” and “can hardly deceive users”. The fact that the clip in question weighed heavily on the judgment of Meta’s supervisory body it was not generated through artificial intelligence tools.

“However – we read at the conclusion of the analysis of the fake Biden video – the Council is concerned by the current rules on manipulated media and believes that it is inconsistent, lacks persuasive justifications and inadequately focused on how the content was created rather than on the harm specific aims to prevent”.
