The presentation of Google Pixel 8a is now imminent: the smartphone should in fact be presented during the I/O on May 14th. In the meantime, however, there is also excellent news for those who own a “basic” Google Pixel 8: Gemini Nano is coming to the top of the compact range the Big G!
In a statement released to colleagues at Android Authority, Google explained that Gemini Nano will also make its way to Pixel 8, as well as on Pixel 8 Pro. For those who don’t know, Google released the Gemini AI on Pixel 8 Pro with the December 2023 flagship software update: the feature, however, has not yet made its debut on the “base” Pixel 8. Many speculated that the delay was due to Pixel 8 technical specificationswhich has just 8 GB of RAM – compared to 12 GB on the Pro model.
Google has not confirmed that technical problems are at the basis of the failure to arrive on the device, although the community does not seem to have any doubts about it. However, the Mountain View company stated that Gemini Nano will arrive by 2024 on Pixel 8, without however providing any more defined launch window in this regard. It therefore seems that Big G’s engineers have managed to find a way to run the company’s LLM also on last year’s compact flagship.
Obviously, Gemini Nano will spin on-device on the two top of the Google ranges of 2023 – which explains why the AI model is so difficult to implement on smartphones with a limited amount of RAM and storage. According to the GizmoChina portal, the feature will be available for Pixel 8 as part of next Feature Update for Big’s smartphones, which should be expected in June.
