In the peaks of the Himalayas can be found the Roopkund Lake, also known as the Skeleton Lake. This site, located at a dizzying 5,029 meters in the Indian state of Uttarakhand, is shrouded in a veil of mystery due to the hundreds of human bones that emerge from its freezing waters when the snow melts.
Discovered in the 1940s, the body of water stimulated the collective imagination and scientific curiosity, giving rise to a series of investigations and theories on the origins and causes of the deaths of these people. From the first theories that suggested a war catastrophe to the possibility of one loss of merchant caravansthe most accepted hypothesis for a long time was that of a group of pilgrims hit by a deadly hail storm, as suggested by the wounds found on the skulls.
However, recent scientific studies have revolutionized our understanding of this conundrum. Advanced DNA analysis revealed that the skeletons belong to different ethnic groups and that the deaths occurred in multiple events, spaced as much as a thousand years apart. Among these remains, individuals of local Indian origin were identified, but also groups that shared genetic links with the eastern Mediterranean, suggesting a much more complex story of travel and interactions between different peoples through the ages.
These data open new perspectives on ancient migration routes, on the interactions between distant civilizations and on the dynamics of human groups that crossed the Himalayas for reasons that are not yet entirely clear.
