in the beginning is Lord Yoshi Toranaga, whom his enemies from the Council of Monarchs have decided to kill. It seems that only one person can help tip the scales in his favor – John Blackthorne. The pilot of a European ship wrecked in a fishing village brings with him knowledge that the Toranagas could use. But even his English protégé has his own enemies. The two men are brought together by the interpreter Toda Mariko, a Christian aristocrat from a disgraced samurai lineage. This mysterious woman tries to balance loyalty to her master with her friendship with Blackthorn, her own faith, and her commitment to her poor father.
