Price-performance banger for 380 euros: E-scooter E9 Max in the test

The one before us E9 Max costs only 399 euros at Iscooterglobal.de instead of 430 euros. With the voucher code E9MAX the price decreases 380 Euro. If that’s still too expensive for you, you can also E9 Classic grab. This costs 320 euros, but compared to the E9 Max it comes with smaller 8.5-inch tires, a 270-watt-hour battery and no suspension. Buyers can get it for just 9 euros more E9 Upgraded an additional rear wheel suspension.

Despite its low price, the E9 Max offers some features that are usually found in slightly more expensive models. This test report shows whether the E9 Max is worth buying.

Optics and workmanship

After unpacking, the user must first fix the handlebars to the handlebar using four screws provided. Then you just have to mount the included bag in front of the handlebars and you’re ready to go. We definitely recommend a helmet for the ride. You can find out more about this in our guide to indicators, emergency calls and music: That’s why a smart bicycle helmet is worth it.

The workmanship quality is appropriate for the low price, but cannot keep up with higher quality e-scooters. The handlebar wobbles slightly and the rear mudguard also appears a bit windy. Overall, the handlebars are neither particularly wide nor particularly high. The E9 Max is therefore particularly suitable for slightly smaller drivers. Anyone who is over 185 centimeters tall will quickly end up in a stooped position when driving, which should be avoided. After all, according to the data sheet, the E9 Max can handle a maximum payload of 120 kilograms and is still pleasantly light with a weight of just over 14 kilograms.

Visually, the e-scooter appears unobtrusive. It comes with the tried and tested frame that is common with many other affordable e-scooters and is predominantly black. Individual elements such as the brake cable are red, which creates a chic contrast.

We think it’s great that Iscooterglobal.de includes a bag with the E9 Max. Once mounted on the handlebars using Velcro straps, it holds around three liters. Enough space for power supply, water bottle, power bank, etc.

The folding mechanism is simple but functional. This reduces the dimensions of the e-scooter from 110 × 44 × 115 centimeters to 115 × 44 × 50 centimeters. A hook on the handlebars snaps onto the rear mudguard. When folded, the e-scooter can be lifted using the handlebars.

Links

On the right side of the handlebar, in addition to the hook for the folding mechanism, there is also the thumb grip for acceleration. This is pleasantly smooth. On the left side are the bell, the mechanical brake handle and the thumb grip for the electric brake. It’s nice that both versions are still available here. Manufacturers of other e-scooters such as the Segway Ninebot G30D II Max (test report) do not have a thumb grip for the engine brake.

In the brake test, the combination of the disc brake on the rear wheel and the engine brake on the front wheel worked well. Controlled braking is also possible. If you want to brake without loss, use the thumb grip. Here too, measured braking is possible.

Display & Light

The small display is neatly integrated into the handlebars in the middle. It shows, among other things, the current speed and battery charge. It is somewhat reflective and difficult to read in direct sunlight. The only button on the e-scooter is located directly below the display. The e-scooter switches on and off via this and the support level cannot be changed. The button also controls the light. The front light is sufficiently bright and its beam angle can be adjusted. The rear light also depends on the power circuit and switches on and off with the front light. It doesn’t light up when braking.

App

The E9 Max comes with its own app called Minirobot. This connects to the e-scooter without any problems and without prior registration. Using the app, the user activates, among other things, cruise control and a zero start option. The app also shows information such as the total operating time, the total kilometers driven, the expected remaining distance and much more. The app also allows a firmware update.

Drive

The E9 Max comes with 10-inch honeycomb tires. These have the advantage of being completely puncture-proof. Their disadvantage: They are significantly harder than tires with air filling and therefore transfer unevenness such as stones, curbs or potholes more directly to the e-scooter and the driver. To mitigate this somewhat, the E9 Max comes with rear wheel suspension. Although this is set a little hard, it still helps to compensate for violent jerks.

The affordable e-scooter variant E9 Classic comes with smaller 8.5-inch tires and forgoes this suspension. We strongly recommend paying 10 euros more for that E9 Upgraded to invest with this suspension. When driving, the E9 Max conveys a direct and very agile driving feeling.

The E9 Max’s front motor has a rated power of 350 watts and a peak power of 500 watts. We cannot find any information about the Newton meters. Overall, the engine’s performance is disappointing. Although it manages to accelerate the 80 kilogram test driver to the maximum permitted speed of 20 kilometers per hour, it weakens even on slight climbs. Anyone who weighs a little more – after all, the E9 Max allows a maximum payload of 120 kilograms – could have real problems with the small engine.

The E9 Max’s battery has a capacity of 360 watt hours. According to the manufacturer, this should allow it to travel around 40 kilometers. The actual maximum range, meanwhile, depends on many factors such as the rider’s weight, the surface, the altitude covered, the riding style, the average speed and much more. With a driver weight of 80 kilograms and urban use with a lot of stop-and-go, we expect it to be just under 30 kilometers before the E9 Max has to be connected to the power supply again.

The E9 Max and its variants are also available from Amazon and other retailers, as our price comparison shows.

Conclusion

The E9 Max is particularly impressive thanks to its affordable price. But its equipment is completely fine. It’s pleasant and agile to drive. The brakes are good, the app is useful, the battery is quite large for the price, the lighting is bright and the folding mechanism is practical. It’s great that Iscooter includes a bag for the handlebars.

Nevertheless, there are also disadvantages. These include the honeycomb tires in conjunction with the suspension that is too hard, which passes on too many jerks from the road to the driver. The engine is also too weak overall.
