The tech giant Siemens is planning to expand its production of fast charging stations for electric cars in Leipzig. According to Maximilian Luichtl, head of the charging infrastructure plant, a four-digit number of the “Sicharge D” systems should be manufactured each year.

On Wednesday, the 1000th column manufactured in Leipzig was handed over to the Leipzig public utility company. So far, the superchargers have been delivered to customers in 38 countries.

The charging system was developed in Leipzig in cooperation with the University of Technology, Economics and Culture (HTWK). Production was ramped up in 2021. The fast charging stations are also produced in a sister plant in Portugal, but Leipzig is the main location. In the future, it will be important to develop variants for the different countries. “Each local market has its own requirements,” said Luichtl.

The plant for the charging infrastructure is an offshoot of the Siemens site for low-voltage switchgear. A total of almost 700 people work there, according to the company, around 200 of them in the charging station division.
