Current data from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) and the ADV monthly statistics show a significant increase in the number of passengers at German main airports, underlining the ongoing recovery of the aviation industry after the pandemic-related slump.

In 2023, around 185.2 million passengers were counted at the 23 main German airports; an increase of 19.3 percent compared to the previous year in 2022. However, compared to the pre-pandemic level in 2019, the passenger volume in 2023 is still significantly behind. While domestic air traffic in Germany fell by around 50 percent compared to 2019, international traffic fell by around 15 percent.

The five largest airports in Germany in terms of passenger processing are Frankfurt/Main, Munich, Berlin-Brandenburg (BER), Düsseldorf and Hamburg with a total of around 152 million passengers in 2023. Frankfurt Airport leads the list with 59.3 million passengers followed by Munich with 37 million and BER with 23.1 million. In Düsseldorf and Hamburg, 19.1 and 13.6 million passengers boarded or disembarked from commercial aircraft in the same period.
