the first evening report cards…

The first evening of theEurovision Song Contest 2024and therefore also begin thereand our report cards – strictly live – of the first semi-final.

Eurovision 2024: the first evening programme

This evening – live on Rai2, RaiPlay and Rai Radio 2 – we will see the performance of 18 artists, representing as many countries, of which however only 15 will be competing. In fact, this year’s format provides that those who have already qualified for the final (Italy, France, United Kingdom, Spain, Germany and Sweden) also performstaggered, over the course of the two semi-finals.

In particular, in addition to the 15 semi-finalists, this evening we will also listen Olly Alexander (United Kingdom), Isaak (Germany) e Markus & Martinus (Sweden). The debut of Angelina Mango it will instead take place on Thursday 9 May, on the occasion of the second semi-final.

At the end of the 18 performances, the public will be able to vote for the 15 competing artists. The 10 most voted will go directly to the Final on Saturday 18 May, where they will compete with the 10 finalists resulting from the second semi-final (Thursday 9) and the 6 artists already qualified.

Eurovision 2024: the report cards of the first semi-final

Silia Kapsis – Liar (Cipro): 6
Dancing and swaying. Cipreggiante and Jenniferlopezzeggiante. A little, just right, also a singer. It sounds like an early 2000s hit by the Pussycat Dolls. Cipro-goes, and succeeds a little.

Teya Dora – You Are The One (Serbia): 4
A beautiful lullaby. In the sense that it is perfect for falling asleep. The chorus is perfect for Ciao Darwin!, when Miss Italia comes down the steps and everyone covers the children’s eyes. Is this the best that Serbia has in store?

Sylvester Belt – Luktelk (Lithuania): 6,5
A very beautiful verse, which becomes a banger with a straight kick ready to make everyone dance, from the worst bars in Caracas to Lithuanian discos. The dance, however, soon turns into a fight, and this is the reason for the plaster on Sylvester Belt’s nose. The text is in the native language, the production is just right and Lithuania reserves a place in the final.

Bambie Thug – Doomsday Blue (Irlanda): 7
Call the dementors of Azkaban, Bellatrix Lestrange has escaped again and is singing Open Kedavra all’Eurovision AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! LET’S DRIVE!!!

Olly Alexander – Dizzy (UK, out of competition): 7,5
Once again: if the UK really gave a damn about Eurovision they would send us any Sam Fender, and there would be no story for anyone. Instead they are for sportsmanship, and let us play this senseless game of musical competition. The most popular of the representatives of other countries has performed on national TV, Olly Alexander already boasts collaborations with Pet Shop Boys and Elton John. But what are we playing for?

Alyona Alyona & Jerry Heil – Teresa & Maria (Ukraine): 5
A great sense of restlessness comes over me when I listen to songs about the homeland. Historical times are the ones we all know, but the nationalism associated with music is always an alienating combination. Music unites and does not divide!

Luna – The Tower (Polonia): 6
After Bellatrix it was right to also give space to Luna Lovegood dressed as Lady Gaga, who appears on stage with the wizards’ chess. The scene of her riding the red horse is the cringiest she has offered us this evening (until now). Lots of choreography and little music. But we are at Eurovision, what did you expect?

Baby Lasagna – Rim Tim Tagi Dim (Croatia): 8
Don’t make puns on your stage name. Come on, don’t make puns on your stage name. There’s no point in making puns about your stage name. Tasty. No, seriously, musically one of the few interesting things presented on stage so far.

Hera Björk – Scared of Heights (Islanda): 3
Well, if you’re Icelandic, you decide to make music and you introduce yourself as Björk, you’re obviously diving into a sea of piranhas. And if you’re afraid of heights, as the song says, maybe diving isn’t for you. The arrangement is the most banal and amateurish thing one can present for an end-of-year recital. It would be possible to consider it avant-garde, if only it were 1970. There is one by Björk, sorry Hera.

Isaac – Always on the Run (Germany, non-going): 9
Aesthetics, vocal timbre and movements that inevitably recall Lewis Capaldi. Spectacular arrangement, incredible voice control and disarming expressiveness. Here we could have a first possible winner.

Raiven – Veronika (Slovenia): 6
You should read (and translate) the text to fully appreciate this passage. For the rest it is really difficult to understand where the playback ends and where Raiven’s voice begins.

Windows95Man – No Rules! (Finlandia): 4(04)
This, after all, is a tech site. So we like the Windows95 man a priori. He has the share of comic artist of this Eurovision. Error 404

Natalia Barbu – In The Middle (Moldavia): 6
After the PC-man it is difficult to take the elegance of the Moldavian Natalia Barbu seriously. We will try. Nothing, we didn’t succeed. Natalia, you’re not the problem, it’s us (anchetuperòcometivienedigiocarefarelaviolinistainplaybackaquest’ora)

Markus & Martinus – Unforgettable (Sweden, not competing): 4
Technically Unforgettable means Unforgettable. It was from the days of Masterpiece of Il Volo that we didn’t listen to a song with a title so little relevant to the song. But wasn’t George Michael dead?

Fahree feat. Ilkin Dovlatov – Apa with Yourself (Azerbaijan): A(0)
There’s someone dressed as Freddie Mercury vocalizing random things. I believe he is an inhabitant of Azerbaijan, those who are called Azeris. And what grade do we give to this song if not a (a) zero.

Electric Fields – One Milkali (One Blood) (Australia): 6
All very beautiful until the chorus. Then it is clearly a burglary of dear Adele. The sad thing is that no one seems to have noticed. We could’ve had it aaaaaaaaaall, rolling in the deeeeeeeeeeeeeeep

Iolanda – Grito (Portugal): 8
Regardless of the fleeting musical trends of the moment, every year Portugal presents a song of extreme elegance and beauty. Language barriers prevent us from appreciating the text. But if the lyrics are at least half as beautiful as the arrangement and the melody, then dear Iolanda, see you on Saturday.

Tali – Fighter (Luxembourg): 3+2
Luxembourg had not participated in Eurovision for 31 years. We’ll only save Dardust’s production, but the melodic line is a bricolage of things felt and resented. Friends, you could have made 32, right?

The results of the vote: the 10 artists who enter the final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2024

Here are the 10 most voted artists of the evening, who will enter the final on Saturday 11 May.
