Physical and digital models combined to support the processes of design, evaluation and understanding of urban transformations, in a sort of augmented reality, to simulate the physical environments of the architectural space by experimenting in real time with the effects of the architectural and environmental variations of the space: from shading, the visual perception of spaces, up to atmospheric and temperature variations (here is a video).
It is called Luminous Planning Table (LPT) and is a practical version 2.0 of the “Luminous Table”, originally conceived and developed by the Polytechnic of Milan, enhanced thanks to the contribution and collaboration with the University of Milan.
The first version was created by the research group coordinated by Barbara Call of the Polytechnic. Today, the synergy with Marco Boffi, professor of Social and Environmental Psychology at the University of Milan allowed it to be enriched with the analysis of the link between space and community, between the design of places and the well-being of people.
Thanks to the user friendly and multi-user platform, the “Light Table” allows professionals and stakeholders to interact directly with the three-dimensional simulated environment.
“The direct exploration features, the interactive capacity and the facilitation of a collaborative design approach make LPT a tool capable of improving the understanding and effects of design solutions, contributing to improving the quality of urban environments,” he said Barbara Call of the Polytechnic of Milan.
“We have enriched this tool with new psycho-social features. This integration will allow us to explore in real time the link between the physical characteristics of places and their psychological dimension and to deepen the emotional relationships that people establish with the environment and the territory”, he concluded Marco Boffi of the State.
