The microprocessor, designed entirely in Italy by Telsy and created by a European supply chain, will make it possible to raise the level of global cybersecurity.

TIM launches the first cryptographic microprocessor designed in Italy capable of raising security in the IoT and smart city fields up to defense systems.

The project was presented today in the presence of Adolfo Urso, Minister of Business and Made in Italy, Federico Eichberg, Head of Cabinet of the Ministry of Business and Made in Italy together with Pietro Labriola, CEO of TIM, Eugenio Santagata, Chief Public Affairs and Security Officer of TIM and CEO of Telsy and Elio Schiavo, Chief Enterprise and Innovative Solutions Officer of TIM.

Designed by a group of Italian engineers from Telsy – a Group company focused on crypto and cyber security that operates within TIM Enterprise – it represents a new tool to strengthen technological autonomy and sovereignty within the framework of national and European cybersecurity strategies .
The solution, which can be integrated into different scenarios, meets the most advanced ‘security by design’ standards and guarantees full reliability of encrypted communications.

The new microchip is an all-Italian ‘security atom’ (root of trust) that allows you to secure all those IT or communication systems that deal with sensitive or confidential information. The microprocessor is produced by an entirely European supply chain, in collaboration with important companies in the sector.

The microprocessor was designed to be used in different fields, civil, military, industrial and in the protection of critical infrastructures such as, for example, railway tracks, electricity and water networks and dams. Added to these are the increasingly widespread contexts of Internet of Things, starting from smart cities with the protection of sensor or camera data in urban and extra-urban areas. In the industrial sector, the Secure Microchip protects the entire production cycle through the integration of a sophisticated cryptographic system with the most advanced cybersecurity functions, guaranteeing the security of the dialogue between devices (machine to machine).

In particular, the microprocessor will also represent a concrete response to the security needs of small and medium-sized businesses and for all those subjects who, in the short term, will have to equip themselves with more solid systems or adapt to the stringent cybersecurity requirements contained inthe Cyber ​​Resilience Act and in the EU Nis2 and CER Directives.

In the context of authentication systems, the microprocessor can generate cryptographic tokens to access data and cloud services in complete security from mobile devices and PCs, such as business or public utility applications for citizens. The Secure Microchip can be integrated into servers, if the services and IT infrastructure are located in a private cloud context. Among the use cases, Public Administration services such as digital identity or financial and home banking systems.

With this project the TIM Group provides innovative technological solutions for cybersecurity. It is an important step for the international promotion of ‘made in Italy’ within the strategic semiconductor industry, in line with the choices that Italy and the European Union are making to strengthen the continental industrial ecosystem.
