A man suspected of spying for Russia and collaborating in a plot to assassinate Volodimir Zelensky was arrested in Poland

A Pole has been arrested in Poland on accusations of spying for Russian military intelligence in an alleged plot to assassinate Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, prosecutors said on Thursday. The man, identified only as Pawel K., was allegedly prepared to transmit airport security information to Russian agents. He was seeking to establish contact with Russians involved in the war in Ukraine and gather detailed information about the Rzeszow-Jasionka airport in southeastern Poland, near the Ukrainian border.

If convicted, Pawel K. could face up to eight years in prison. The arrest was the result of close cooperation between Polish and Ukrainian prosecutors and security services. Several individuals, including one with Russian and Spanish nationalities, have been arrested in Poland on spying charges since Russia’s attack on Ukraine in February 2022.

Meanwhile, in Germany, two men of Russian-German nationality were arrested on suspicion of espionage, with one accused of planning attacks on military installations to disrupt aid delivery to Ukraine. The main accused, Dieter S., had been exchanging information with a person linked to Russian intelligence services since October 2023.

The actions were reportedly intended to undermine military support from Germany to Ukraine against Russian aggression. The Russian embassy in Berlin denied any evidence linking the detainees to Russian structures. German officials praised the security services for preventing potential explosive attacks that could have sabotaged military aid to Ukraine. This case is seen as a serious instance of alleged activity by agents of the Russian regime.
