The death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny prompted the United States to start preparing a new package of sanctions against Russia, NBC News reports. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said today that the sanctions package will be presented on Friday, February 23.
Kirby did not provide new details about the sanctions, which will be revealed in three days. He only pointed out that the new package will “supplement” the previous ones due to the death of Alexei Navalny.
According to him, the United States still has not determined the cause of Navalny’s death, but insists that Russian President Vladimir Putin is responsible. Kirby emphasized the US government’s position that “Putin is directly responsible” no matter what.
