America is betting on Qatar and Turkey to mediate with Kabul

NEW YORK – Qatar will continue – at least for the moment – to host the Western embassies that were previously based in Kabul. Turkey, on the other hand, has the task of communicating with the Taliban on the ground while at the same time keeping the airport open and safe. These are the main points that emerged yesterday during the ministerial meeting virtually convened by the United States; which was attended by the G7 countries, as well as, in fact, Qatar and Turkey and the representatives of NATO (the secretary general Jens Stoltenberg) and the European Union (the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell).
