Coach Mikel Arteta regretted Arsenal’s elimination in the Champions League quarter-finals to Bayern Munich. The coach expressed his sadness at the way the team fell, producing chances to draw and even turn the match around. However, the Spaniard praised the Gunners’ attitude in the defeat at the Allianz Arena, this Wednesday (17).”
“Obviously we are very sad and disappointed with the result. It was a game resolved in detail and the goals we conceded in the first leg made the difference in the decision. We didn’t defend our area well when it came to scoring and we ended up trying everything to get a draw, but we didn’t make it. Even so, we stayed alive and I’m very proud of the players’ attitude”, he said.
The Arsenal squad’s lack of experience in European competitions was also on the agenda again. Arteta reinforced that the team hadn’t competed in the Champions League for almost a decade and that they still needed to create a shell to dream bigger in European competition.
“We haven’t played in the Champions League for seven years and we haven’t reached this stage in 14. There are reasons for that and we want to do everything we can to change that scenario. But the details that define who has the ability and quality to advance to a semi-final are Sometimes, they end up favoring another team and, perhaps, we don’t have them in our favor yet”, he said.
“When you look historically, all the clubs that reached certain levels needed seven, eight, even 10 years to consolidate. But, today, that won’t make us feel better, without a shadow of a doubt,” he added.
Now, Arsenal turns its attention to the English Championship. After losing the lead in the English Championship to Manchester City, the Gunners have the opportunity to regain their position this Saturday (20), at 3:30 pm (Brasília time), at the Molineux Stadium.
