Dominican Starling Marte Hits 150th Career Home Run in Mets’ 9-1 Victory
NEW YORK (AP) — Dominican outfielder Starling Marte made history on Wednesday by hitting the 150th home run of his career during the New York Mets’ 9-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates, completing a series sweep.
Marte, who previously played eight seasons with the Pirates, launched a two-run homer over the left-center field wall in the third inning, giving the Mets a 2-1 lead. The Mets’ offense continued to shine with Harrison Bader hitting a home run and Tyrone Taylor contributing a two-run single. Brandon Nimmo’s two-run single in the eighth inning helped secure the victory.
On the pitching side, Dominican right-hander Luis Severino impressed by allowing just one unearned run over six innings, earning his second win of the season. This outing marked Severino’s longest start since his seven scoreless innings for the Yankees last August.
The Pirates saw solid performances from Dominican Oneil Cruz, who went 4-2, and Mexican-American Rowdy Tellez, who went 4-1. Meanwhile, Marte contributed to the Mets’ offensive dominance with a 1-for-5 performance, scoring one run and driving in two RBIs. Puerto Rican Francisco Lindor went 4-1 with a run scored, and Venezuelan Francisco Álvarez added a hit while scoring a run and driving in a run as well.
The Mets now hold a 10-3 record after a slow 0-5 start, showing strong momentum as they aim to continue their winning ways. With Marte’s milestone home run and the team’s impressive performance, the Mets have proven to be a formidable force in the early stages of the season.
