Fabio Wibmer Conquers Legendary Streif Ice Slope on Bike
Austrian mountain biking megastar Fabio Wibmer is known for his extraordinary projects and jaw-dropping tricks. Just ahead of the 87th edition of the Hahnenkamm Races, the renowned sportsman conquered the legendary Streif Ice Slope on his bike.
With a top speed of 107 kilometers per hour, a drop of 14 meters, and a maximum jump distance of 36 meters, Wibmer pushed both himself and his equipment to their limits to realize his ambitious project. His courageous performance pays reverence to the world‘s most infamous downhill track.
“Kitzbühel and Streif have always been special,” Wibmer acknowledged. “I grew up less than an hour’s drive from here, and as a kid, I used to cheer on the skiing stars. At some point, I had a big dream, that I would also ski Streif – but not with traditional skis, but on a bicycle with some extra obstacles.”
Preparing for this unique project required nearly two years of work. Wibmer and his team painstakingly adapted his equipment to the unique conditions, including setting up a special suspension and adjusting tire pressure for ice and snow. Additionally, Wibmer had special spikes installed on his tires to deal with the sub-zero temperatures and icy conditions.
Discussing the preparation process, Wibmer shared, “It’s difficult to simulate all the details in advance. There are few slopes like Streif. I trained on the snow for a long time and we tested some jumps.”
Wibmer, known for his relaxed attitude, disclosed that despite the appearance of ease, considerable effort goes into each project. “The preparation time was so long that I lost count. Good preparation is the foundation of success,” he stated.
With a powerful team and a high-quality bike, Wibmer’s dream of conquering the Streif was realized, showcasing extreme jumps and breathtaking descents.
