Biden, war in Ukraine increases similar risks in the Indo-Pacific area

The current ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine increases the need for an Indo-Pacific region free from internal conflict. This was stated by American President Joe Biden, in Tokyo to chair the Quad meeting which, in addition to the delegations from Japan and the United States, also hosts the premieres of India and Australia. Biden also said the deal between the Quad countries is not a “fad” and the intention is to thrive for years. The Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida echoes him, according to whom “no country should find itself in the same situation as Ukraine in this part of the world“.

The summit between the Quad nations is hosted for the first time by Japan, a country that has ongoing claims on islands disputed by Beijing, along with the latter’s attempts to militarization in some areas of the East China Sea, as the threat of missile tests from North Korea and the long-standing territorial dispute with Russia, north of the archipelago, is not in sight. At the end of the meeting, according to the Japanese press, the statement will focus on sharing ideas that no nation can attempt to destabilize the world order with the use of force, an explicit reference to China’s expansionist aims in the Taiwan Strait.
